Awards for Distinguished Service to Catholic Education – November 24, 2009

A special awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King to recognize distinguished service to Catholic education. The awards liturgy and presentation ceremony is an annual event by the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board to honour individuals who have contributed to Catholic education in some significant or outstanding way.
This year's recipients of the Award for Distinguished Service to Catholic Education are Corrado Ciapanna, Patrick J. Daly, Sylvia M. Kajiura and Peter Narduzzi.
Ciapanna, a Superintendent of Education, is being recognized for his more than thirty years of service to the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. Over the course of his career, he has contributed in many and varied ways to the system's Catholic distinctiveness and culture of continuous improvement. He is also recognized for his long-standing service to the Catholic Youth Organization and the Knights of Columbus.
As a trustee of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board for the past 24 years and current Chairperson, Daly has made an invaluable contribution to Catholic education, not only in the Hamilton Catholic community but throughout the province of Ontario and beyond. He is widely known as a remarkable Catholic leader and family man whose devotion and love for his family, Church and Catholic community are exemplary.
Sylvia M. Kajiura is a retired principal with the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board who is being celebrated for her pioneering work in Special Education and French Immersion. She has been recognized throughout the years for her extensive leadership roles with numerous community organizations.
Retired principal Peter Narduzzi is known throughout the Hamilton Catholic community as an outstanding Catholic educator and administrator. Over the course of his teaching vocation with the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, he has served as principal in most of the board's secondary schools where he contributed in many and lasting ways to the Catholic fabric of the school.
