Assessment and Statistics

Assessment and Statistics is responsible for the maintenance of information on the assessment roll number/school support/electoral status of every student in our system as well as on ratepayers that support Catholic Education. The Department also provides assistance to schools daily on school admission requirements, immigration issues, foreign student information, and student data integrity. The Department is responsible for analyzing the integrity of the October & March statistical enrolment, school organization and the average class size reports.

Statistics is responsible for the collection and distribution of data pertaining to enrolment and teaching staff.

Athletics / Hamilton-Wentworth Athletic Association - HWCAA

The Continuing Education Section provides educational services to approximately 20,000 children, adolescents and adults in the Hamilton community every year.

Long-standing programs such as night school, summer school and international languages, complement the learning that is currently taking place in our elementary and secondary schools. Newer programs such as the After Hours Tutorial and Individual Tutoring Programs, Grade 7 & 8 Summer Remedial Program, and Exam Preparation Course have been developed as supplementary learning opportunities for youth.

A wide range of educational programs is available to adults through our St. Charles Adult Education Centres. Services include:

Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education is a mode of learning which combines classroom theory with out of school learning. This exciting program provides secondary school students with
opportunities to:

Director of Education

The Director of Education is responsible for the implementation of the overall policies, goals and objectives developed by the Board of Trustees, directs the operation of the system, the administration of programs, and serves as Secretary to the Board. The Director oversees the Director’s Council which includes Superintendents of Education, the Superintendent of Finance/Treasurer, Administrator of Human Resources and Controller of Plant. The council addresses all reports to the Board on instructional and administrative matters.

Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy

In keeping with the Municipal Freedom and Protection of Privacy Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Office within the Board is responsible for fulfilling the following requirements:
  • responding to requests for access to records;
  • protecting personal privacy;
  • providing specific information to the Information and Privacy Commissioner;
  • making information available to the public;
  • records management;
  • security and confidentiality of records.
The Freedom of Information and Privacy Coordinator's responsibilities include training staff, developing procedures for the administration of the Act, collecting the necessary information for the General Classes of Records and Personal Information Bank indexes, and making decisions on requests under the Act (on the delegated authority of the head of the institution).

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program offers Ontario secondary school students, who are at least 16 years of age and who have completed grade 10, the opportunity to register and train as an apprentice while enrolled in high school. While participating in cooperative education, OYAP allows a registered student to earn credits towards his or her Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and to gain apprenticeship training towards a Certificate of Qualification with journey person status in a skilled trade.

Payroll

The Payroll Department oversees the payment of 4,908 active teaching, non-teaching and casual employees of the Board, including retroactive pay, timesheets and pay adjustments.
Other responsibilities include day-to-day payroll, TPPB, OMERS, EI records of employment, employee inquiries, GPP, and liaison with unions e.g. OECTA, LIUNA, CUPE, and the College of Teachers.

Purchasing

J. Ward, Purchasing Manager

The Purchasing Department is responsible for the procurement of goods (e.g. classroom supplies and furniture, office supplies and furniture, photocopiers, computer supplies, etc.) and services (e.g. cafeteria food services, cell phones, etc.) for the Board's elementary and secondary schools, satellite offices and administration. The department is also responsible for the Board's telecommunication systems and break-in and property damage insurance claims. The basic elements of the purchasing function are many and varied. The Purchasing Department is committed to obtaining the proper equipment, materials, supplies and services when needed, in the right quantity, in the right quality, at the right price and from the right source.

Records Centre

T. Conry

The Records Centre is responsible for the collection, maintenance and storage of the Board’s inactive records, e.g. payroll, accounts, employee records, student records. Records that must be maintained for longer periods of time, such as student records and payroll records, are microfilmed. Former students of the Board can obtain school transcripts from the Records Centre or by calling the Board at 905-525-2930, ext. 1772.

The Records Centre maintains some records as permanent archival and historical documents. It acts as a support and resource to School and Board secretaries in regard to filing systems. A central forms catalogue is maintained and requests are filled and forwarded to schools and offices.

Religion and Family Life

The Religion and Family Life Department is responsible for the religious and family life curricula and related programs in all the schools. Accordingly, multiculturalism/diversity, environmental issues, AIDS education, and Christian/community service fall within its jurisdiction. The Department is also responsible for the faith formation and religious renewal of teachers and Board personnel, and provides opportunities for the fulfillment of this spiritual dimension.

Student Services

Domenica Leone, Assistant Superintendent of Education - Special Education

The Student Services Department is made up of four sections:

Psychoeducational Services
Social Work Services
Special Education Services
Speech, Language & Hearing Services

These four sections are coordinated by the Principal of Programs - Special Education and Vice-Principal of Programs - Special Education. Psychoeducational Services are supervised by the Board Psychologist and include Resource Teachers - Learning Disabilities. Social Work Services are coordinated by the Social Work Supervisor and include Social Workers. The Special Education Services Section includes: Resource Teachers for Behaviour, Developmental Disabilities, Gifted & Talented, Visually Impaired, Deaf/Blind, and Autism/PDD; a Transition Coordinator/Facilitator; Educational Assistants - Behaviour; Job Coaches; and Braille Transcribers. The Speech, Language and Hearing Services Section is supervised by a Speech Pathologist and includes Speech-Language Pathologists, Resource Teachers - Deaf & Hard of Hearing, an Audiologist, Educational Assistants - Augmentative Communication and Speech-Language, and a Computer Technician.

All of these people provide services to exceptional pupils within our Board. The provision of special education programs and services with the Board is inclusionary in nature, that is, the focus is on providing these programs and services within the context of the regular classroom setting.

The purpose of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA) is to improve opportunities for people with disabilities and to provide for their involvement in the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to their full participation in the life of the province. To this end, the ODA requires each school board to prepare an annual accessibility plan; to consult with people with disabilities in the preparation of this plan; and to make the plan public.
This is the first annual plan (2003 - 2004) prepared by the Accessibility Working Group of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. The plan describes: (1) the measures that the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board has taken in the past, and (2) the measures that the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will take during the year (2003 - 2004) to identify, remove and prevent barriers for people with disabilities.

Transportation

"In May 2008 the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth School Board partnered together and formed the Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS) Consortium. The mandate for the Consortium includes the provision of safe, effective and efficient transportation services for students for both Partner Boards.

In the event that you require assistance from the Consortium staff during the start up phase, all you need to do is call the contact centre 1-800-691-6402 and provide them with the details pertaining to your inquiry. All telephone calls to the Board office will be re-directed through the contact centre during the start up phase.
