Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sunday, September 30th. The school, located in Elfrida, has approximately 280 students and it is the community’s hope with the growth expected from new housing the enrolment may increase.
At the anniversary celebration held in the school, Principal Nancy D'Olimpio welcomed present and past students, staff, families and friends. Director of Education Patricia Amos, Superintendents of Education Gus Hubbard and Corrado Ciapanna were also present to “celebrate, reunite” with the community, and “rediscover” why the school continues to capture the hearts of community members and alumni after all these years.
The highlight of the event was the Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by Bishop Douglas Crosby. Indicating that “education is a stepping stone to success and education transforms the darkness of ignorance into the light of knowledge,” the bishop congratulated parents and teachers for encouraging children to live a life of courage through the use of their God-given gifts and talents.
School alumni were particularly thrilled to view memorabilia and photographs marking each decade of the school’s history. The event served as an acknowledgment of the efforts of parents and staff whose skill, hard work, perseverance, and enthusiasm have contributed significantly to student achievement over these five past decades. They have been a labour of love with the focus on students getting an “Education in Mind, Body, and Spirit,” suggested Principal Nancy D’Olimpio.
With the Spirit, the teachers and staff of Our Lady of the Assumption School will nurture and guide the children into the next 50 years of Catholic Education with "gratitude, service, and sacrifice.”
