Trailblazers event inspires female law students

On October 16th, nine students from St. Thomas More and St. Mary Catholic Secondary Schools had the opportunity to attend Trailblazers: Meeting Women in Law Day, a full-day educational experience in Toronto featuring The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean as keynote speaker. The event is sponsored by the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) and provides an opportunity for female high school students across Ontario to meet women who have made a difference in equality rights over the course of their law careers.

The grade 12 students, along with Law teachers Andrea Leone and James Brown, began the day with a Persons Day Breakfast. This event commemorates the anniversary of the 1929 “Persons Case” that declared women equal under Canadian law. The students had a chance to hear the former Governor General, and later, to meet and ask her questions at a private reception. In the afternoon, the students toured Osgoode Hall, the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law School, and visited Gowlings Law Firm. The event is hoped to inspire some of these young women to become legal advocates!

STM student participants: Atia Bashizadah, Collin Do, Pooja Kumar, and Monica Pineda.

St. Mary student participants: Nicola Benincasa, Kayla Cockburn, Katarina DiFazio, Bianca Freitas, and Kassara Remillar
