St. Marguerite students ‘say no’ to plastic bags

St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Elementary School has the Plastic Bag Grab Challenge quite literally in the bag.

During Earth Week, April 18-22, students at the Mountain school collected 21,599 carry out plastic shopping bags as part of the Recycling Council of Ontario’s “Plastic Bag Grab Challenge.” The challenge awards cash prizes to the elementary school that collects the most plastic bags.

More than one billion plastic bags are handed out in Canada every year, the contest’s website claims. All can be reused and recycled.

In addition to diverting plastic bags from landfills, St. Marguerite d’Youville has issued its own challenge to the community to “SAY NO” to plastic bags.

“Use reusable bags and help the environment,” says Principal Jenny Frappa.
