A new web page on the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board site has made it into the big leagues. Scoring big points in design, accessibility, and effectiveness, the Schedules and Standings section, located in the "Participate" tab on the homepage, is making it easier for student athletes, coaches, and fans to keep track of their team.
The revamp was created by Media Development Officer Don Henderson to fill a need for a more user-friendly and inviting Athletics section.
"We wanted to provide students with faster access to schedule changes and automatic standings," he says.
With that, the new design features sport icons associated with each team, making it easier to navigate through the system.
"We broke out all the schedules so that each sport has its own area," explains Henderson. "Before if you played basketball, there would be Midget, Junior, and Senior all in the same PDF. Now you just see your schedule – it's a little clearer, and looks great on a mobile device."
Coaches also benefit as the system now allows them to submit the score right after the game, through their cell phones. This new feature frees up more of the administrative duties they are responsible for, and allows them more time to be coaches.
But it doesn't stop there.
Henderson embedded a map feature that allows users to click on the game location and be redirected to Google Maps where they can find the best route to and from the game.
Another neat component ties together the Board articles and social media photos associated with a particular game.
"They are added right into the Schedules and Standings," says Henderson. "We don't cover every game but we try to get a good sampling of all the games so that at some point every team gets photographed and written about."
Even sport specific videos are linked at the bottom of certain pages, like football and swimming, which offer a glimpse in the life of a student athlete.
With the look and feel like a proper sports website, Henderson hopes to continue to build new features that will further allow students to showcase their successes in sports. For now, he just hopes you enjoy the new experience.
