Cardinals bring home OFSAA bronze in girls’ soccer

By Larry Moko

For the fourth consecutive year the Cardinal Newman Cardinals have brought home a medal from the OFSAA girls’ high school soccer championships.

At this year’s 20-team AAA tournament in LaSalle and Windsor, Newman blanked London’s A.B. Lucas Vikings, 4-0, to win the bronze medal.

Brianna Mascia led the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association representatives with three goals. The other went to Jenavieve Agro.

Newman scored twice in each half.

With the exception of 2016 when the Cardinals captured the gold medal, all three of their other medal finishes have been bronze.

The Cardinals ended up first in their pool this year with three victories and one loss. Then, in a quarter-final playoff, Newman edged Kitchener St. Mary’s Eagles, 1-0. In the semifinal Saturday morning, however, Newman dropped a 2-0 decision to Burlington’s Dr. Frank J. Hayden Huskies on goals by Amanda West and Coral Palmer.

Hayden recently defeated the HWCAA champion Bishop Ryan Celtics, 6-0, in a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference semifinal, while Newman took its GHAC semifinal over Oakville’s Holy Trinity Titans, 1-0.

Then, in the GHAC final, Newman blanked Hayden, 2-0.

The OFSAA gold medal went to Toronto’s Lawrence Park Panthers, who defeated Hayden 2-0.
