For five recent graduates of St. Martin's Manor, the completion of their high school diploma served as an important teachable moment, not just for them, but for their children.
The manor is a Young Parent, Infant & Children’s Centre for pregnant and parenting young women and their children. In collaboration with St. Charles Adult and Continuing Education and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, it offers an on-site high school so young mothers can have the opportunity to attend school while at St. Martin’s Manor.
Opening the celebration, Master of Ceremonies Holly Silenzi commended students for not only making the decision to complete their schooling, but doing so knowing the obstacles they would endure trying to balance academics with motherhood.
“Each of you has faced barriers and challenges most high school graduates never have,” she said.
“You deserve to be recognized for more than earning your high school diploma, you deserve to be recognized for your perseverance to not only making your lives better but investing in your children’s future. You are exceptional.”
Also bringing words of greeting and congratulations on behalf of the HWCDSB, Director of Education David Hansen reiterated the magnitude of their accomplishment as a lesson for themselves, but also for their children.
“In life, your children are going to have a whole bunch of teachers, and what you have to know is that the most important teacher they will ever have, is you.”
“And look at the lesson you are teaching them today.”
