An OYAP presentation, hosted by Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School, was designed to inspire women to consider careers in the trades.
Presenting to a group of female students, Jamie McMillan, a female ironworker and entrepreneur, stressed the need for women in the trades. At present, only 4% women are employed in the construction field.
It’s a fast growing area, said McMillan, noting that there are number of positions that will need to be filled in the nuclear energy sector.
McMillan’s presentation also focused on learning, growing, and continually striving for success. She spoke about the barriers and challenges that rather than knocking us down, should instead prepare us for “our next mountain to climb.”
In addition to a fun photo booth, the day offered interested students the opportunity to visit tech classes to learn more about the different trades.
It was an empowering day for many of the female students.
