When grade 6 and 7 students at St. Lawrence Catholic Elementary School learned about how COVID-19 restrictions could impact residents at retirement homes during Thanksgiving, they decided to put matters into their own hands.
“Throughout class discussions, the students realized that individuals within care facilities will unlikely have visits from their family members this year,” said Teacher Samantha Di Giovanni.
Using their letter writing skills just acquired in class, students in Di Giovanni and Deborah Falcao’s classes put together Thanksgiving wishes and short letters to share with those at Lincoln Park Retirement Residence, Native Women’s Centre and Dundurn Place Care Centre.
The letters included background stories of Thanksgiving, family traditions and thankful quotes. As an extra special touch, students decorated envelopes and drew pictures.
“Students expressed excitement and a sense of community when writing their letters,” said Di Giovanni.
“They were able to spread words of care, love and hope to those who may not have any family or friends visiting them due to our current situation.”
Letters were given to the residents on Monday, October 12th.
