In these trying times, a new challenge for students at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School is making sure that they stay on top of their mental health.
The task involves creating a calming haven in their homes – a space designated to emotional regulation and managing those big, difficult feelings.
“Now more than ever – it really is important we are talking care of ourselves,” says Child and Youth Worker Nikki Szczepaniak, who spearheaded the challenge along with Special Education Resource Teacher Shay Standish.
“We can’t pour from an empty cup.”
"Unless you are taking care of yourself you can not give to others. Encourage ways to make it a ritual in your daily life. Like brushing your teeth.”
What makes the challenge special, Szczepaniak notes, is that each calming corner will look different.
For some students, it can be a place filled with stuffed animals and blankets perfect for snuggling and Christian meditation, and for others it can store different activities, like books and colouring pages to keep the mind active.
