Dozens of teams and individuals – including two students from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board – were honoured by Sport Hamilton at its 21st Annual Breakfast of Champions on December 17th for sports excellence.
Jozef Glenn from St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School and Mariah Saliba from St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School were presented with this year’s HWCDSB Excellence Award. The award is presented annually to two Grade 7 students, one male and one female, who meet all graduate expectations, have very good athletic ability, display positive respect, teamwork and sportsmanship, and are role models to their fellow students.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the awards were presented virtually.
For Jozef, he recognizes that being an athlete is more than just one’s talent, but rather is a result of determination, teamwork and spirit. Whether it’s playing hockey, football, soccer, basketball, or baseball, he always displays a positive attitude regardless of the outcome.
“When we win, we are not a sour winner, but we show our win with gratitude and thanks,” he said. “When we lose, we are not a sour loser, but we keep our head up and move forward. We work harder and show thanks.”
“When we are a positive role model to fellow students, we are showing them how to be, especially with the younger ones because they look up to us.”
Across the city at St. Gabriel, Mariah leads by the same example. Her positivity, both inside the classroom and on the field, helps foster a supportive environment amongst peers. A soccer and football player, Mariah always displays good sportsmanship through encouraging words and positive actions.
“Mariah upholds her Catholic values in every aspect of her school life,” said Principal Brent Condari. “Peers look up to her in many ways such as her behaviour, work habits and positive sportsmanship.”
