At St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School, donation drives have become a part of the school’s tradition.

This year the student council wanted to do something extra special to create a huge impact within our Hamilton community,” said teacher Lynette DiGregorio-Zotti.

“The student council chose a small local charity, located in the heart of Hamilton’s North End. St. Matthew’s student council collected non-perishable food items and toiletry items during the Thanksgiving and Easter seasons for the Eva Rothwell Centre.”

A registered charity within Hamilton, the Eva Rothwell Centre provides health, education, and recreation services to the community at no cost to the participants through partnerships with service providers, funding organizations and the education system.

“During this Lenten season, the St. Matthew community collected a total of 2,568 items to donate to the Eva Rothwell Centre,” said teacher Nicole D'Andrea-Iorio.

“Mr. Tyler Iorio, Trustee and a member of the board of directors at the Eva Rothwell Centre, were welcomed into St. Matthew school to admire the large donation and express his overwhelming gratitude. The donation created a huge impact for families of the Equal Opportunities communities.”

During the final drop-off of the Lenten donation, some students from the Equal Opportunity schools within the board (Cathedral High School, Holy Name of Jesus, St. Patrick, and St. Lawrence) has an opportunity to meet with Principal Marc Trotta.

“One brave student from St. Lawrence introduced himself to Mr. Trotta and thanked him for all the wonderful donations that filled the Eva Rothwell pantry.”

“These connections, acts of kindness and moments of integrity connect Hamiltonians together while following in Jesus’ footsteps.”

“Special thank you to the St. Matthew’s student council who truly embraced the Gospel values during this Lenten season. St. Matthew school community has truly impacted the quality of lives for those that seek help at the Eva Rothwell Centre. It is truly a blessing to witness Hamiltonians helping their fellow Hamiltonians.”
