A SHSM co-op placement with the First-aid Sisters has given St. Mary Catholic Secondary School student Carley Dyment a first-hand view of Hamilton’s Emergency Services.
First-aid Sisters provides Red Cross certifications in Standard First Aid, CPR AED, Basic Life Support and Emergency First Aid.
The placement was a first for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Health and Wellness program which provides students with sector-specific education and training in their chosen career pathway.
“The essential skills I have learned in my co-op placement with the First-aid Sisters, a long-standing independent business that provides Red Cross certifications, are invaluable,” says Dyment. “While working with the First Aid Sisters, I had many hands-on experiences in secondary schools in both Boards, with public and private businesses and community organizations like the Bob Kemp Hospice and the Hamilton Police.”
Through the co-op placement, Dyment was also able to speak with various healthcare professionals about what they do in their various fields.
