If there’s one thing DECA has taught three former Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School students, it’s the value of real-world learning.
Now members of the McMaster World Congress Organizing Committee, the three – Julian Lombardi (class of 2020), JP Parente (2020) and Carm Barone (2021) – are paving the way for Bishop Tonnos’ next wave of “emerging leaders and entrepreneurs” by providing them with reach-ahead opportunities for learning and growth.
On February 2 & 3, Grade 9-12 students at Bishop Tonnos CSS were invited by Lombardi, Co-Chair of the 44th McMaster World Congress to attend the two-day event to learn about relevant issues in today’s business environment from leading industry professionals. This year’s theme, “Smart Technology,” focused on innovations in the smart technology space and their impact on commerce, engineering, health-tech and sustainability. BT students had a chance to hear speakers from companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Meta, Transpod, Point ClickCare, Canada Health Infoway, and more.
Not only did they have great fun, said Bishop Tonnos Business Studies Teacher, Gelsie Riverso-Casella, but were inspired for the future. “They all feel motivated to learn and grow to face and tackle the challenges of tomorrow.”
“Julian, JP and Christian are former members of the Bishop Tonnos DECA Chapter and understand the importance of experiential learning,” she added. “The BT community is so proud of them, and is so appreciative of their desire to give back and open doors of opportunity for other students.”
