It was a chance of a lifetime for ten students from St. Agnes Catholic Elementary School who, on October 23rd, had an opportunity to meet Canada’s first female astronaut, Dr. Roberta Bondar.
The students, from grades 5 to 8, met the Canadian legend at the Blast Off with Canadian Astronaut Roberta Bondar philharmonic concert at Hamilton Place. For the grade 6 students who had just completed cereal box research projects on various Canadian astronauts, it made their school assignment very real.
Boris Brott and Dr. Bondar took the time after the performance to come out and meet the students who had chosen Roberta Bondar as their astronaut of study. They showed their projects to Dr. Bondar, who not only posed for photos, but autographed their projects and congratulated them on their hard work. Row 3: Ava Mercanti; Serena D’Angelo; Madison Cumerlato; Izabella Morawski.
The experience was especially thrilling for Melani and Andrea, both recent newcomers to Canada, notes teacher Julie Parco.
“This was their first opportunity to truly appreciate the contribution of Dr. Bondar and the many other Canadian astronauts to not just this country, but the world,” she indicated. “This was a day these students will never forget!”
