Over 600 elementary students gathered at the Father Kennedy Catholic Education Centre this past month to be recognized with a Director’s Award of Excellence.

Presented annually, the awards honour 12 students from each elementary school for outstanding achievement in academics, faith, and community involvement. Categories include Catholic School Mission/Vision, Academic Excellence, Excellent Effort in the Pursuit of Learning, Environmental Stewardship, and proficiency across a range of subject areas.

In his remarks to students and families, Director of Education David Hansen emphasized that the real celebration lies not just in receiving a certificate, but in acknowledging the hard work, perseverance, and dedication that brought each student to this moment.

“Your principal and staff have selected you as examples of excellence at your school. That’s a big deal,” he said. “You’ve worked hard, and you should be proud — and grateful to those who helped you along the way.”

Hansen reflected on the deeper meaning of the awards within Catholic education, adding, “Each year, the Director’s Awards remind us that excellence in academics, faith, and service is rooted in a deeper encounter with Christ. In the achievements of our students, we see their commitment to living out the values of our Catholic faith — with hope, compassion, and courage.”

He encouraged students to take a moment to thank their families, teachers, and school staff for the important role they played in their success. Sharing his own experience as a graduate of the board, Hansen offered an inspiring thought: among today’s award winners could be tomorrow’s leaders — perhaps even a future Director of Education. He invited students to visit his office and take a photo at the Director’s desk, imagining the possibility that one day, they might return to that very spot to continue the work of Catholic education.

“The possibilities are limitless,” he said.
