During the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board Seniors’ Mass on April 23, Father Mark Gatto, Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, encouraged the students to use those lessons learned during their 12 years of elementary and secondary education beyond their final days in school.
Attended by hundreds of grade 12 students, the Graduates’ Mass is an annual tradition organized by the Student Presidents’ Council and a committee of teachers and chaplain leaders.
With the mass occurring only two days after the passing of Pope Francis, Father Gatto encouraged the students to find inspiration from his life.
“We’re called to be people of joy in all that we do, and how we live out of lives and our faith.”
Expressing his regrets, Father Gatto read a message from His Excellency Bishop Crosby.
“Lift people up, make a positive difference in the lives of others. Jesus did. Pope Francis did. I know that you can too. I am counting on you. The world is waiting for you to.”
Bringing words of greetings on behalf of the Board of Trustees, Chairperson of the Board commended the graduating students for their significant accomplishments and encouraged them to remember how this goodness and Christian service positively impacts others.
“Please never forget that your leadership and Christian witness makes a significant difference across our system in the lives of others and serves as a source of hope.”
His words were echoed by Director of Education David Hansen.
“The accomplishment of completing secondary school is amazing and something you really need to be proud of. Over the last four years, you've worked to overcome obstacles, you've persevered, you've developed lifetime friendships, you've learned things you didn't even think about....”
“You've been formed to go out and transform our world.”
“So, head out there and transform it and make it better, because we know you can do it.”
A Blessing for Graduates
May God’s blessing follow you all as you find new journeys to travel.
May you walk safely along the pathways of your dreams.
May his gentle hand guide the decisions you will make and the passions that you follow.
May your hearts and lives always reflect his love and truth,
And may hope be a light within you that you carry into each new day.
Amen.
