The 2025 Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference track and field championships are off and running.

It's a competition spread over three days this year with events scheduled for May 16, 22 and 23 at Mohawk Sports Park.

Opening-day track action Friday saw qualifying heats held for the 100 and 200-metre sprints. The top 16 finishes in novice, junior and senior divisions advance to the semifinal rounds.

For long jump and javelin, however, athletes completed their qualification on Day 1 for the upcoming South Regional meet.

Julia Dziejma of the Bishop Ryan Celtics placed first overall in novice girls' javelin with a throw of 21.21 metres.

And in the junior boys' category, Marco Tavares of the St. Jean de Brébeuf Braves had the best throw of the day -- 38.12m.

Among the qualifiers for the 100 and 200 distances, several Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association athletes turned in the best performances. Victoria Zolaturiuk of the Bishop Tonnos Titans had the fastest times for both the senior girls' 100m (12.10 seconds) and the 200m (25.17).

Tori D'Angela of the St. Thomas More Knights also clocked the fastest times in the novice girls' division. She won the 100m in 12.70 and the 200 in 25.62.
Another Bishop Ryan Celtics entrant -- Milo Domanski -- led the field in the junior boys' 100m with the best time of 11.46. His 24.36 also was the third quickest for the 200m.

Following the May 28-29 South Regionals in Welland the OFSAA championships are scheduled to be held June 5-7 at Toronto's York University.
