Back-to-school time can be both exciting and a little overwhelming for children and their families. A few simple strategies can make a big difference in easing the transition. By setting up good routines, keeping communication open, and helping children feel prepared, caregivers can support a calm, confident start to the year and set the stage for success.

Establish Routines
Getting back on a school schedule before the first day can make mornings smoother and reduce stress for everyone. Start about two weeks ahead by gradually moving bedtimes earlier, setting consistent wake-up times, and re-establishing regular mealtimes. Limit recreational screen time, especially in the evening, to help kids wind down and get quality sleep. These small adjustments help children feel rested, focused, and ready to learn when school starts.

Encourage Independence
Helping children do things on their own boosts confidence and makes school mornings easier. Younger children can practice skills like zipping coats, tying shoes, and packing backpacks. Older children can take charge of making lunches, prepping school uniform, organizing school materials, setting alarms, managing homework, and keeping track of schedules. Start practicing these routines a few weeks before school so they become habits helping your child feel capable, organized, and ready for the day.

Communicate

Talk openly with your child about how they feel about going back to school. Accept all feelings, excitement, worries, or fears and let them know it’s okay to feel that way. Avoid dismissing their concerns; instead, listen closely and offer validation so they feel heard and supported.

Conversation Starters:

  •  How are you feeling about going to school?
  • Are you worried about anything?
  • How can I help?
  • What is your favourite thing to do at school?
  • Who are you looking forward to seeing again?

Foster a Positive Mindset
Get your child excited for the new school year! Talk about seeing friends, learning new things, recess, and for older kids, sports, clubs, and projects. Highlight opportunities to try something new, meet teachers, and set personal goals. Encourage curiosity, celebrate achievements, and focus on the friendships, fun, and growth the year will bring.
