World Suicide Prevention Day is observed each year on September 10. Established in 2003, the day invites us to reflect on the global impact of suicide and the important role that educators, families, and faith communities play in supporting student mental health and well-being.
At the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, we are guided by our shared conviction to “place Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church at the centre” of students’ learning experiences. We strive to create a welcoming and supportive school environment where every student, staff member, parent/guardian, and visitor feels accepted, valued, and cared for. Through faith, we foster hope, belonging, and connection within our schools and wider community.
Although the world can sometimes feel complex and uncertain, it is also filled with many opportunities and blessings. Among these blessings are Catholic education, our shared commitment to pastoral care, and our deep respect for the dignity of every person, all of which inspire us to walk alongside one another, offering compassion, understanding, and support, especially in times of need.
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” This theme encourages us to transform the way we view and talk about suicide by shifting from silence and stigma to openness, empathy, and understanding. Through conversation, awareness, and support, we can create stronger, more connected communities where no one feels alone.
If you are experiencing significant distress and feel unable to cope, additional support from a mental health or healthcare professional may be needed. Just as with physical health, there are times when students may not feel mentally well.
