The City of Hamilton is proud to support Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, happening Sunday, September 28, 2025. This province-wide campaign reminds families that a quick monthly test could save your life.
Why It Matters
In a fire, you may have 60 seconds or less to escape. A working smoke alarm is often the only warning you’ll get.
How to Stay Safe
Test alarms monthly by pressing the button.
Replace batteries once a year or when low.
Replace alarms every 10 years.
Install alarms on every floor, outside bedrooms, and ideally in each bedroom.
Create and practice a family fire escape plan.
Your Responsibility
Homeowners: Working alarms are required by law.
Tenants: Report broken alarms to landlords.
Building Owners: Must ensure alarms are installed and working in every unit.
