Indigenous Education Month

This year’s Catholic Education Week theme, “Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope,” calls us to reflect on the distinctive mission of Catholic education—creating spaces where students grow in faith, empathy, and compassion. In that same spirit of hope and renewal, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board reaffirms its commitment to reconciliation, understanding, and relationship-building with Indigenous communities.

Throughout Indigenous Education Month (November), HWCDSB schools will engage in learning that strengthens relationships and increases awareness and appreciation of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, perspectives, and ways of knowing.

Treaties Recognition Week – November 2–8
Established by the Government of Ontario in 2016, Treaties Recognition Week honours the importance of treaties and helps students and residents of Ontario learn more about treaty rights and relationships. By deepening our understanding of treaty obligations, we nurture respect, reconciliation, and partnership between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Educators and students are encouraged to join the conversation happening across Ontario during Treaty Week by using #TreatyON and #HWCDSBTRW and by following the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs on social media.

International Inuit Day – November 7
Also known as International Circumpolar Inuit Day, this observance celebrates the richness and resilience of diverse Inuit cultures and amplifies Inuit voices. It is an opportunity to recognize the strength and adaptability that have long been part of Inuit ways of knowing, being, and doing.

Indigenous Veterans Day – November 8
Observed each year on November 8, Indigenous Veterans Day honours the proud tradition of military service by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Their contributions in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War are remembered with deep gratitude and respect.

Louis Riel Day – November 16
On November 16, students are invited to reflect on the life and legacy of Louis Riel, a leader, advocate, and founder of the Métis Nation. Riel’s commitment to justice and equality helped shape the Canada we know today. His courage and vision continue to inspire generations to stand for truth, identity, and community.

As Pilgrims of Hope, the HWCDSB community continues to walk forward together in faith and a shared commitment to Active Listening, Prayer, and Right Action. In this spirit, the 2025 Jubilee calls us to renewal and trust in God’s guidance. As His Holiness Pope Francis reminds us:

“We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision.”
