For nearly four decades, the Supported Community Work Experience Program (SCWEP) has been opening doors for Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board students.
Designed for learners with exceptionalities in their final years of school, typically ages 18 to 21, the program helps students explore real workplaces, build confidence and prepare for life beyond the classroom. With guidance for both students and families, SCWEP supports each individual on their path toward a meaningful future in the community.
For St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic Secondary School students, Robert Mowatt and Spain Nyeard, cheering on our local Tiger-Cats is also part of the program as their placement is at the football team’s storefront.
“During the Eastern Semi-Final, the Tiger-Cats Store was busy with fans, and even featured a special appearance by Ti-Cat legend Simoni Lawrence,” said Educational Assistant and Job Coach Roy Mills. “Our two students were busy behind the scenes preparing Tiger-Cats merchandise for the big game on Saturday.”
During their shift, TSN staff Matthew Scianitti and Dave Naylor were on-site filming a segment. After noticing the pair focused on their duties, the crew invited them over for a photo and a short conversation about their experience working with the Tiger-Cats.
“It was a truly special moment for our students and a wonderful example of the opportunities created through the Supported Community Work Experience Program.”
