The gymnasium at Wilma’s Place was filled with excitement on November 26, 2025, as three emotional support dogs, Carlin, Nesbitt, and Bailey, trotted in to greet students. Their visit wasn’t just about wagging tails and warm cuddles; it was about bringing hope, comfort, and a sense of peace during a stressful season.

“This initiative honours the legacy of Willma Rita Scherloski, founder of Wilma’s Place and former Vice Principal and then Principal of Cathedral Girls High School, and Superintendent of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board,” said Chaplaincy Leader Robyn Aguila and Secondary Religion and Family Life Consultant Nicky Perri.

“Her three pearls of wisdom—nourish yourself, never give up, and stick your neck out—continue to inspire staff and students alike.”

To keep that spirit alive, Aguila invited Fr. Jarek Pachoki, O.M.I., pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish, and Paolo Masian, Youth Minister, to join the visit.

Fr. Jarek, who has been a familiar pastoral presence in HWCDSB schools since 2012, brought along his furry companions to spread joy and remind students of God’s gentle creation.

The timing couldn’t have been better, they said.

“With academic pressures, seasonal changes, and the upcoming Christmas holidays, many students were feeling the weight of stress. The moment the announcement was made ‘The dogs are here!’ cheers echoed through the hallways. Faces lit up as students eagerly gathered to meet their four-legged friends.”

“It made me feel excited, good, and comfortable,” shared student Maria Londra.

Fr. Jarek emphasized the mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits these visits bring, helping students feel relaxed and connected, not just to each other, but to their faith.

“These regular visits remind everyone that sometimes, the simplest gestures, such as, a wagging tail, a gentle nuzzle, can make the biggest difference,” said Aguila and Perri.

“Through these encounters, students experience God’s presence, comfort, joy, and peace, living out the values that Wilma cherished.”
