Matthew SchaeferThe Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is proud to celebrate three graduates who are beginning their NHL careers this season: Matthew Schaefer and Luca Pinelli from St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School, and Florian Xhekaj from Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School. This rare achievement is a source of pride for their former school communities and for our entire Catholic school system.

Meet Our NHL Alumni

Matthew Schaefer — St. John Henry Newman CSS
Matthew enters the league as the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, selected by the New York Islanders. A standout defenceman known for his speed, composure, and strong two-way play, Matthew has been recognized as one of the top young prospects in Canadian hockey. His leadership, discipline, and work ethic have earned him recognition both on and off the ice.

Florian Xhekaj — Bishop Ryan CSS

Florian, drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, is known for his strong physical presence, grit, and dedication to continuous improvement. Standing 6’4”, he brings size, skill, and determination to his game. His perseverance and commitment to growth have helped propel him to the NHL and inspire many young athletes in our community.

Luca Pinelli — St. John Henry Newman CSS
Drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Luca is a dynamic forward recognized for his playmaking ability, speed, and competitiveness. Known as a hardworking and intelligent player, Luca consistently demonstrates strong two-way hockey instincts and a drive to excel at the highest level.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Matthew, Florian, and Luca as they begin this exciting chapter. They carry with them not only their talent and dedication, but also the support and pride of their families, former teachers, coaches, and the entire HWCDSB community.
