Over one hundred future teachers came together for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board Student Teacher Information Night, an open house designed to help student teachers learn, connect, and envision their future vocation in Catholic education.
Attendees were welcomed by Laura Palermo, Superintendent of People and Catholic Community, and Diana Kay, Senior Manager of Labour and Employee Relations.
In his remarks, Director of Education David Hansen thanked the organizers and acknowledged the ongoing success of the event, Now in its fourth year, the event continues to grow in participation and momentum. He welcomed attendees and introduced members of the Senior Administrative Team, offering an important reflection for those considering a future teaching role within a Catholic school:
“When you are asked, ‘Why do you want to teach in a Catholic school?’ there is a deeper response than simply wanting to teach,” he said. “What we hope is that at the heart of your daily work in the classroom is a desire to live out our mission, to enable all learners to realize the fullness of humanity, of which Our Lord Jesus Christ is the model. Upon being hired, and during your commissioning ceremony, you will make a promise to go and teach as Jesus did.”
Chairperson of the Board, Mr. John Valvasori brought greetings on behalf of the Board of Trustees and expressed gratitude to those discerning this path, “The most important aspects of Catholic education have not changed, nor will they,” he said. “Faith formation will always be essential. I believe that good teachers see teaching as a vocation rather than just a job. Do what your heart tells you to do when it comes to your Catholicity.”
In addition to connecting with board representatives, superintendents of education, consultants, principals and vice-principals, and staff from the People and Catholic Community department, prospective teachers had the opportunity to ask questions and participate in on-site interviews for positions on the uncertified roster. The entire evening offered a meaningful and immediate pathway into working with the HWCDSB.
