March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), and schools across the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board are invited to celebrate by wearing fun, colourful, and mismatched socks as part of the global #LotsOfSocks campaign.

World Down Syndrome Day is observed on the 21st day of the 3rd month to represent the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. The day serves as a global opportunity to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and celebrate the gifts and contributions of people with Down syndrome.

This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” highlights the importance of connection and belonging. People with Down syndrome can experience loneliness when opportunities for meaningful participation and authentic friendships are limited. The 2026 theme calls on schools, workplaces, and communities to foster environments where every person is valued, included, and supported.

As Pope Francis reminds us:

“No one can face life in isolation. We need a community that supports and helps us, in which we can help one another to keep looking ahead.”
— Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti

At HWCDSB, our commitment to inclusive education is rooted in the belief that every child can grow and thrive within their neighbourhood school community. Through our Each Belongs philosophy, we strive to ensure that all students experience dignity, respect, and a true sense of belonging.

As Superintendent of Education with responsibility for Dignity of the Human Person and Special Education Services, Mrs. Tracey Ferrie reflected on the importance of connection within our schools.

“In our hallways and classrooms, and in partnership with our families, we are reminded every day that belonging matters. No child should ever feel alone. Our Each Belongs commitment calls us to notice one another, to build friendships, and to create school communities where every student feels welcomed and valued as a child of God. On World Down Syndrome Day, we stand together against loneliness by choosing connection, kindness, and authentic inclusion in the small, everyday moments that make a difference.”

On World Down Syndrome Day and every day, we celebrate the many gifts, talents, and contributions that individuals with Down syndrome bring to our classrooms and communities.

Show your support by wearing your brightest, most colourful, and mismatched socks on March 21 and join the global movement to stand Together Against Loneliness.
