Grade 9 students at St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic Secondary School were treated to a tasty experience as they had an opportunity to indulge in the French culture.

Students were invited to participate in Chef à l'École, an interactive, hands-on experience for students to expand their current French vocabulary while preparing a simple recipe.

Leading the session, Chefs Alexa Milne and Kristin Pavey worked step-by-step with students as they made "Langue de Chat," or "Cat's Tongue," a classic French dessert similar to a sugar cookie that resembles its namesake.

The class was split into four groups, with specific tasks – like mixing or washing – per member. A highlight was seeing what group could whip their egg whites the fastest to form peaks.

The program is offered to students in grades 1 through 12, providing a mix of recipes to accommodate different learning levels and dietary needs.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for students to practice their French in an authentic setting, and students had fun learning and practicing their baking skills together – a big change from our regular class routine,” said Teacher Katherine Curto.

“Chef Alexa also shared a bit of Canadian French history with the students, along with her personal story of how learning another language opened up doors for her career and gave her opportunities for travel.”

“SJB looks forward to more visits in the future with the Chef à l’Ecole program!”
