HWCDSB Students Strike Gold at MusicFest Nationals The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is proud to celebrate the exceptional musical achievements of students from St. John Henry Newman, St. Mary, and St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary Schools, each of whom earned GOLD at the prestigious MusicFest Nationals in Niagara Falls this past week.
MusicFest Nationals is Canada’s premier showcase for school music programs. Participation is by invitation only, and ensembles perform alongside some of the most accomplished young musicians from across the country. In addition to receiving professional adjudication, students participate in workshops, hear other top ensembles, and attend performances by renowned Canadian artists—making this an enriching and inspiring musical experience.
This year, HWCDSB was exceptionally well represented, with vocal and instrumental ensembles from three secondary schools:
● St. John Henry Newman CSS Rock Band, directed by Andreja Racki-Mahovlich
● St. Mary CSS Chamber Choir, directed by Nancy Boss
● St. Thomas More CSS UKnighted Harmony Vocal Ensemble, directed by Josephine Tavares
● St. Thomas More CSS Concert Band, directed by Connie Couture
Each of these ensembles demonstrated the highest level of musical excellence, earning GOLD ratings for their performances at the festival.
These achievements reflect months—indeed, years—of dedication. Students in these programs engage deeply in music-making, developing advanced ensemble skills, tackling challenging repertoire, and refining their ability to read and interpret music. Their performances go far beyond simple music-making. Students sing and play in multiple languages and genres, from classical and jazz to contemporary styles, often navigating complex harmonies and sophisticated arrangements. This level of artistry requires focus, discipline, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence.
The result is not only technically strong performances, but also expressive, meaningful music that reflects the richness of each ensemble’s sound and identity. Beyond awards and accolades, these groups highlight the positive, life-changing impact of music education. Students who participate in music programs and extracurricular ensembles experience a strong sense of belonging and community, foster lasting friendships, and build confidence and personal growth through performance and collaboration. Music provides a meaningful form of expression, allowing students to communicate ideas and emotions creatively. They also develop discipline and teamwork through rehearsals and performances, as well as a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Music programs like these are a vital part of the high school experience, helping students grow not only as musicians but as well-rounded individuals.
The success of these three schools underscores the strength of music education across HWCDSB. Their commitment to artistic excellence and dedication to developing well-trained, expressive ensembles set a high standard and continue a proud tradition within our board. Rooted in our Catholic tradition, music has long been a vital form of worship and expression of faith. It is a powerful witness to see our students share their God-given talents, including sacred repertoire, on a secular stage.
Andreja Racki-Mahovlich (Newman), whose Rock Band earned GOLD, will be retiring this June after many years of dedicated service. Her impact on students and music education within our board has been profound, inspiring generations of young musicians.
