Destiny Discover
English as a Second Language (ESL)

Overview

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board welcomes all English language learners into our Catholic secondary school communities. We strive to offer an environment in which students of various cultures and languages can be successful.

ESL Supports in our Secondary Schools

Reception and orientation activities are provided on an ongoing basis to assist newcomer students who are joining our schools, to ensure that they are supported academically and socially.

Secondary teachers support students who are in the process of learning English by considering each student’s level of English language proficiency and providing appropriate accommodations and modifications to the Ontario Curriculum.

While all HWCDSB secondary schools support English language learners, more fulsome ESL programming is offered at Cathedral Catholic Secondary School, St. Jean de Brébeuf Catholic Secondary School, and St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School. These schools offer a range of ESL credit courses which are tailored to different levels of proficiency in English. In addition, they offer a range of other credit courses adapted to the needs of English language learners (e.g., geography, religion, history, science) on a needs basis.
