Earlier this month, Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School hosted its third annual Celebration with Clergy luncheon in the library learning commons, where chaplaincy students welcomed The Most Reverend Bishop Wayne Lobsinger, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton, local clergy, and invited guests. A crackling fireplace displayed on screen added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by students.
The gathering highlighted student voice and faith leadership, with deeply personal and heartfelt reflections on students’ journey in Catholic education. Chaplaincy leaders Silas Luciani (Grade 10), Angelina Tomlinson (Grade 11), and Janica Van Alstine (Grade 12) shared reflections and words of gratitude, recognizing the meaningful role clergy play in supporting students’ spiritual journeys. Throughout the luncheon, the student ministry choir offered hymn performances while guests enjoyed the meal.
Principal Maria Calabrese opened the celebration by welcoming those in attendance and expressing appreciation for the relationships that help guide the Bishop Tonnos community in faith. Special guests included Chairperson J. Valvasori, Director of Education David Hansen, Trustee P. Homerski, Rev. Pierre Luc of St. Ann Parish in Ancaster, and Rev. Jarek Pachocki of St. Patrick Parish.
Bringing greetings on behalf of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board and its Trustees, Mr. Hansen reflected that one of the “jewels” of Catholic education is the relationship between parish and school, a partnership that continues to nurture belonging, faith, and community for students.
Bishop Lobsinger also brought greetings from The Most Reverend Joseph Dabrowski, encouraging students to “be the difference.” He reminded those gathered that Catholic education is about more than subjects like math, science, or geography, it is about discovering who God calls each person to be. Reflecting on faith and personal growth, he encouraged students to consider the kind of person they want to be, choosing generosity over selfishness, and shared that when we strive to live as God calls us to live, we often discover our deepest joy.
The luncheon also recognized the leadership of Ms. Tina Fitzgerald and the chaplaincy team for organizing the celebration, along with the ongoing support of Catholic School Council Chair Ms. Spadafora-Falco and the many staff and faith partners who help strengthen the home-parish-school relationship at Bishop Tonnos CSS.
