On May 26, 2026, the field at Cathedral High School came alive with the energy and excitement of the annual Copa Cathedral ESL Soccer Tournament, World Cup Edition, bringing students together through the world’s game.
Organized by ESL teachers Aaron Marques and Emma Durka, the tournament featured five co-ed teams of English as a Second Language (ESL) students representing countries from around the globe: Morocco, France, Japan, Brazil and Jamaica. Throughout the day, students showcased not only their soccer skills, but also the spirit, pride and cultural diversity that make the Cathedral community so vibrant.
More than just a competition, COPA Cathedral created opportunities for students to build friendships, grow in confidence and experience a strong sense of belonging both on and off the field.
“At Cathedral High School, the annual Copa Cathedral ESL Soccer Tournament is a celebration of community, culture and the shared love of the world’s favourite sport,” said organizers. “For our ESL students, it creates a space where language barriers fade and the excitement of the game brings everyone together.”
The tournament also highlighted the powerful role sports can play in building connections within a school community.
“Students who might not normally cross paths come together as teammates, forming connections that extend beyond the sidelines,” organizers shared.
With excitement already building ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup, Copa Cathedral captured that same global spirit, reminding everyone that soccer truly speaks a universal language.
