St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School welcomed Ward 14 City Councillor Mike Spadafora for a special visit on November 17, 2025. The event offered students a unique opportunity to explore civic leadership, community involvement, and the vital role municipal government plays in shaping vibrant neighbourhoods.
Councillor Spadafora, a proud STM alumnus, spoke with students in the Civics, Law, and Politics classes about the responsibilities of local leaders and the importance of active citizenship. His return to STM served as an example of how graduates can go on to serve and strengthen their communities.
For many students, the visit was a powerful reminder that they are active members of the wider Hamilton community. Seeing an elected official who once walked through the same halls made local government feel more accessible, relatable, and relevant to their own aspirations for the future.
“Opportunities like this help empower our young people,” said Teacher Andrea Leone.
“They remind students that civic engagement begins with awareness, and that even at a young age, they can contribute to positive change.”
