At Cathedral High School, the annual Copa Cathedral ESL Soccer Tournament is a celebration of community, culture, and the shared love of the world’s favourite sport. For the school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) students, it creates a space where language barriers fade, and the excitement of the game brings everyone together.

This year’s tournament featured four co-ed teams of ESL students from diverse backgrounds. The event was organized by ESL Teachers Aaron Marques and Emma Durka, whose guidance and commitment ensured that the day reflected Cathedral’s values of inclusion and equity.

“Mr. Luciani’s leadership class did an amazing job of promoting the tournament and managing key logistics to make the day run smoothly,” said Cristina Ciancone-Barbati, ELL Support Teacher and Step Assessor.

“In addition to giving our hardworking students a day of fun, Copa Cathedral gives every student the chance to shine.”

The tournament also highlighted the powerful role sports play in building community.

“Students who might not normally cross paths come together as teammates, forming connections that extend beyond the sidelines.”

“Copa Cathedral ESL is more than a tournament. It is a tradition that honours every culture and reminds us that soccer is truly a universal language, connecting students to one another and to a deeper sense of belonging.”
