Hearts were on fire on the morning of February 10, 2026, when over 30 excited secondary students gathered at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary to begin their formation as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

Their learning was enthusiastically guided by Deacon Mark Shaw, who brought the rich history of the Mass to life in engaging discussions which included explanations of sacred traditions, the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and the beauty found in every part of the liturgy.

In the afternoon, Chaplaincy Leaders gladly continued the training, giving students the invaluable opportunity to practice and grow in confidence as future ministers of the Eucharist.

Deacon Shaw shared how wonderful the students were, inspired by their reverence and eagerness to serve.

Raissa, a student from Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School, offered a heartfelt reflection on her experience:
“The formation to become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion was both engaging and informative. Deacon Mark Shaw made the session interesting and easy to understand. I learned many new things about the sacred objects used in the Church, such as the names of the different cloths placed on the altar. The formation taught me what to do when distributing the Eucharist, and I now feel more prepared and confident to serve in this role.”

Filled with gratitude and joy, Raissa and all the students look forward to serving their school communities, especially at the upcoming Easter Mass, with faith, humility and love.

“...as we see bread and wine with our bodily eyes, let us see and believe firmly that it is His Most Holy Body and Blood, True and Living.” St. Francis of Assisi
