Students in the ALL (Alternative Learning and Life Skills) program at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School have launched Hot Dog Fridays, a weekly initiative that is creating meaningful learning experiences while fostering inclusion and community within the school.

Each Friday, students come together to prepare hot dogs, set up their stand, and serve teachers and peers during the lunch hour. The initiative provides students with valuable opportunities to interact with others outside of their usual classes, develop communication skills, and build confidence as they take on responsibilities such as organizing, cooking, cleaning, and handling money.

The program reflects the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board’s Each Belongs philosophy, with every student playing a special and important role in the success of the initiative. Through hands-on participation, students are strengthening life skills while experiencing a strong sense of pride and belonging within the school community.

As the program continues to grow, Hot Dog Fridays has become a highlight of the week at St. Thomas More CSS, showcasing how experiential learning can support student growth while celebrating the unique gifts and contributions of every learner.

“As their teacher, I am so proud of their hard work and growth,” said Mrs. Michelle Fortino, ALL Special Education Teacher. “Seeing the students build confidence, interact with others, and take pride in what they’ve created has been truly special.”
