Throughout the month of June, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board proudly recognizes National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, languages, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island.
National Indigenous History Month provides an opportunity for all members of our learning community to deepen their understanding of Indigenous perspectives, acknowledge the enduring strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, and reflect on our collective responsibility toward truth, reconciliation, and right relationships.
As a Catholic school community, we are called to walk together in the spirit of respect, humility, and justice. We recognize the lasting impacts of colonial policies and residential schools, and we remain committed to learning from Indigenous voices, supporting Indigenous student success and well-being, and fostering environments where Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning are valued and celebrated.
We are grateful to the Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community partners, students, families, and educators who continue to guide and inspire our journey toward reconciliation.
National Indigenous History Month also includes National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, a day to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, languages, knowledge systems, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. Held on the summer solstice, a time of cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous communities, National Indigenous Peoples Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of Indigenous Peoples and to learn from the stories, teachings, and experiences that continue to shape our shared future.
Throughout June, we encourage students, staff, and families to take time to learn about the histories and contemporary experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrate their achievements and contributions, and reflect on how each of us can contribute to a more just and equitable future for all.
Together, we honour the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a future built on understanding, respect, and reconciliation.
