Last month, St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School was proud to welcome several alumni from the Hamilton Police Service back to campus for the school's first-ever Alumni Police Day.
Students had the unique opportunity to hear firsthand from former STM graduates who have pursued careers in policing and civilian service. The visiting police officers, civilian members, and auxiliary members shared their educational journeys, career experiences, and valuable insights into the many opportunities available within law enforcement and police services.
The event provided students with an engaging look at the realities of working in a police service, highlighting the diverse roles that contribute to public safety. Presenters spoke about the importance of leadership, teamwork, communication, professionalism, and community engagement. Students were able to ask questions, learn about various career pathways, and gain a deeper understanding of how both sworn officers and civilian professionals work together to support and keep our communities safe.
The presentations left a lasting impression on many students. Sophia Aguilar shared, “I learned that the Hamilton Police Service has both civilian and officer roles. The presentation showed me that there are many different career opportunities within policing and that there are many paths you can take to serve your community.”
For students considering future careers in the field, the event was especially inspiring. “Hearing the stories from all of the different officers really inspired me to pursue a career in law and criminology,” said Shawna Malko.
The event also resonated with staff members who recognized its value in connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences. Law teacher Andrea Leone reflected, “This was a valuable opportunity for our students to learn directly from STM alumni who have built successful careers in policing and public service. Hearing their experiences helped students better understand the many pathways available after high school and the importance of community leadership.”
Claire Burke, Department Head of Canada and World Studies and Law Teacher, added, “What made this event so meaningful was seeing our students engage in thoughtful conversations with alumni who once sat in the same classrooms. Their willingness to share their journeys and answer questions provided students with authentic insight into careers dedicated to serving others.”

“For many students, the highlight of the day was seeing former STM students return to their alma mater and share how their experiences at St. Thomas More helped shape their personal and professional success.”
The event also strengthened the connection between students and community partners while showcasing the many ways individuals can serve and support their communities through careers in policing and public service.
