Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Elementary School welcomed a special guest as part of its Snuggle Up and Read Day celebrations and Black History Month. Retired principal and children’s author Dr. Marie Ssemanda visited the school to read her book, “The Boy with Magic Eyes,” to primary students.
The story follows a young boy named Ben as he helps search for his grandmother’s lost purse. After the read-aloud, Dr. Ssemanda engaged students in thoughtful discussion, asking questions about the story.
The visit was organized by Principal Josie Zuppa, who invited Dr. Ssemanda to share her book to promote a love of reading while also highlighting Black excellence in education during Black History Month.
Beginning her career with the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board in 1995, Dr. Ssemanda led initiatives in literacy, student leadership, and equity.
