During Social Work Week 2026, March 2–8, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board proudly recognizes and celebrates the dedicated social workers who serve our students, families, and school communities each and every day.

This year’s theme — Empathy. Expertise. Together. — reflects the interconnected strengths that define the profession of social work. Each word stands powerfully on its own, yet together they express the unique ability of social workers to blend compassion with critical thinking, professional knowledge, and deep lived understanding.

Social workers are the largest group of mental health professionals in Ontario and across Canada. Within our Catholic schools, they provide care that is student-centred, trauma-informed, and responsive to the realities of children, youth, and families. Their work is grounded in advanced education, evidence-based practice, and a deep understanding of the social factors that influence mental health and well-being.

At HWCDSB, our social workers walk alongside students during some of their most vulnerable moments. They collaborate closely with school teams, community partners, and families to ensure that every student is supported with dignity, compassion, and hope.

“Our social workers embody this year’s theme in the way they show up each day,” says Jenny Athanasiou-Malisa, Manager of Social Work Services. “Empathy guides their relationships, expertise informs their practice, and together with families, school teams, and community partners, they create meaningful pathways of support for students. Their work is rooted in compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child.”

Their work reflects our commitment to the Dignity of the Human Person and to fostering learning environments where each student feels seen, heard, and valued.

As we mark Social Work Week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our social workers for the empathy they show, the expertise they bring, and the partnerships they build, together strengthening our Catholic school communities.

Thank you for the difference you make.
