St. James the Apostle Celebrates 50 Years
On June 11, students, staff, families, alumni, and community members came together to honour five decades of faith-filled learning, service, and Catholic education at St. James the Apostle Catholic Elementary School.
Beginning with a liturgy lead by Father Andew, the celebration reflected on the school's rich history while recognizing the many people who have contributed to its success over the past fifty years.
“Tonight, we celebrate more than a number,” said Principal Tina Fricano.
“We celebrate a school that has shaped generations of students, a place where families have found connection, and a community where faith is not just taught, but lived each day.”
“For 50 years, St. James the Apostle has been a place where students are nurtured academically, socially, and spiritually...where they learn not only how to succeed, but how to care, how to serve, and how to walk in faith. And when we reflect on that history, we recognize that it is built on people, the many individuals who have walked these halls before us and left their mark through their dedication, their care, and their belief in Catholic education.”
Leading up to the anniversary, students decorated the halls in artwork honouring St. James, creating a vibrant display that celebrated the school's history and values.
Drawing parallels from the school's patron saint, Principal Tina Fricano reflected on St. James the Apostle, a pilgrim, a person of faith, and someone who stepped forward with courage when called.
“In many ways, our journey as a school mirrors that same path – grounded in faith, shaped by community, and always moving forward with purpose.”
Bringing greetings on behalf of senior administration, Superintendent of Education Dean DiFrancesco highlighted the school's enduring legacy and the impact it has had on generations of students and families.
“We look back with gratitude to June 13, 1976, when this school was officially blessed and opened by the Most Reverend Paul F. Reding, Bishop of Hamilton. On that day, something much greater than a building was established. A community began and a legacy took root. When the gold key was presented to the first Principal, Mr. Jack Antolich, it symbolized far more than the opening of doors. It marked the beginning of a shared commitment to excellence in Catholic education. That commitment has guided generations ever since.”
Since the beginning, the school’s motto has been: "Let the Love of Knowledge Flourish."
“For fifty years, those words have not simply been displayed; they have been lived,” he said.
“In classrooms, in hallways, in prayer, and in service to others, this school has nurtured both the mind and the spirit, grounding learning in faith, curiosity, and compassion.”
