Students Compete at 46th Annual Chess Tournament

On Thursday, April 30, St. Luke Catholic Elementary School hosted the 46th Annual Chess Tournament. A total of 256 students from 41 elementary schools across the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board gathered to compete for the ultimate chess title.

Students in Grades 2 through 8 earned their place at the tournament by first competing within their own schools, with one student per grade selected to represent their school at the board-level event. Played in a round-robin format, participants were grouped by grade into competitive brackets, creating an exciting and engaging atmosphere throughout the day.

“Whether a student is a seasoned competitor or learning the game for the first time, there is a place for them here to proudly represent their schools and be part of a team,” said Co-Chair Jenna Frank.

“Chess truly creates a space for different strengths to shine.”

More than just a game, chess provides valuable learning opportunities. It helps students develop critical thinking skills, strengthens their ability to visualize and analyze complex situations, and improves concentration and attention span. These benefits extend far beyond the chessboard, supporting both academic and personal growth.
