The Liuna 4 Ice Centre was alive with energy this March as Catholic elementary school teams from across the board came together for the annual “3 on 3” Daryl Mahler Memorial Challenge.
From the early morning hours, the building was filled with excitement—players arriving with teammates, families finding their way through busy stands, and the steady rhythm of game-day routines setting the tone for what would be a full day of hockey.
This event offers something unique. Players step away from their association teams and represent their schools, creating a different kind of competition—one rooted in school pride, teamwork, and community. It’s not uncommon to see familiar teammates facing off against one another, adding an extra layer of fun and intensity to each game.
The format keeps things moving. With 3-on-3 play on half-ice and quick line changes, every shift matters. The pace is fast, the space is open, and players are constantly involved. The result is a day filled with action, skill, and plenty of memorable moments.
Open to both boys and girls from a wide range of playing levels—from house league to AAA—the Challenge continues to be an inclusive event that brings students together through sport.
The tournament began more than a decade ago at Cathedral High School, led by teachers Jeff Toole and Angelo Mule. It was created in memory of Daryl Mahler, a dedicated educator and coach whose passion for students and athletics left a lasting legacy.
Now hosted by St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School, the event continues to grow thanks to the leadership of teacher and coach Trevor Young and the support of over 80 student volunteers. Their efforts behind the scenes help ensure a smooth and successful experience for every participant.
Following a full day of play and over 100 mini-games, teams competed hard across all divisions. Congratulations to this year’s champions:
Junior A – Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School
Junior B – St. Francis Xavier Catholic Elementary School
Junior C – St. Ann Ancaster Catholic Elementary School
Senior A – St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School
Senior B – St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School
Senior C – St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Elementary School
Thank you to all players, coaches, volunteers, and families who contributed to another fantastic day of hockey.
