October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding, challenge stigma and recognize the strengths and potential of people with learning disabilities and ADHD.
Learning disabilities are brain-based differences that can affect how a person takes in, stores, recalls or uses information. They are not a reflection of intelligence or effort. With appropriate supports and accommodations, students with learning disabilities can thrive in school and beyond.
This year’s theme, “Unique Minds. Remarkable Potential.” reflects the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board’s Each Belongs philosophy and our belief in the inherent dignity, gifts and potential of every learner. Learning differently is not learning less. By recognizing individual strengths, understanding different learning needs and removing barriers, we help create schools where each student is known, valued, supported and able to fully participate.
Throughout the month, the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO) is encouraging Ontarians to “See the strengths. Understand the needs. Remove the barriers.”
