Ways to Reconcile story

In 52 Ways to Reconcile, David A. Robertson highlights the many ways individuals can actively participate in reconciliation. On September 30, members of the HWCDSB engaged in a meaningful day of learning and reflection by visiting the Mohawk Institute and the Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford. The day began with Amanda Clement, Truth and Reconciliation Consultant, sharing an excerpt from Robertson’s book, reminding participants of the importance of taking action on the path toward healing and reconciliation.

Throughout the day, staff members listened to Survivors, Elders, Senators, and children of Survivors, gaining a deeper understanding of the realities and injustices experienced by Indigenous Peoples through the Indian Residential School system. Participants were given the privilege of touring the former Mohawk Institute alongside those who had attended the school. Survivors generously shared their stories of pain and loss, allowing us to bear witness to their truths and help carry the burden of remembrance.

It was a day marked by both mourning and reflection. Yet amid the sorrow, there were powerful lessons in resilience, strength, and hope. As we listened, we heard truth. As we listened, we heard laughter. We witnessed the enduring spirit of individuals and communities who continue to move forward while honouring the past.

As Catholic educators, we are called to walk with Christ by walking alongside others in compassion and understanding. What better way to answer that call than by journeying alongside Indigenous neighbours and friends? As we continue our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, we are reminded of our board motto, Each Belongs, and of the message that resonates across the country: Every Child Matters.
