World Suicide Prevention Day is observed each year on September 10. Established in 2003, the day invites us to reflect on the global impact of suicide and the important role that educators, families, and faith communities play in supporting student mental health and well-being.
At the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, we are guided by our shared conviction to “place Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church at the centre” of students’ learning experiences. We strive to create welcoming and supportive school environments where every student, staff member, parent/guardian, and visitor feels accepted, valued, and cared for. Through faith, we foster hope, belonging, and connection within our schools and wider community.
Our shared commitment to Catholic education, pastoral care, and the dignity of every person calls us to walk alongside one another with compassion, understanding, and support, especially in times of need.
2026 marks the third and final year of the World Suicide Prevention Day theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” with the call to action, “Start the Conversation.” The theme encourages us to challenge stigma and transform the way we view and talk about suicide by shifting from silence and misunderstanding to openness, empathy, and support. By starting conversations, listening with compassion, and reaching out to one another, we can help create stronger, more connected communities where people feel supported in speaking up and seeking help.
If you are experiencing significant distress and feel unable to cope, additional support from a mental health or healthcare professional may be needed. Just as with physical health, there are times when students may not feel mentally well.
