On January 17, Cathedral High School hosted a special ceremony in the school’s chapel to honour Grade 12 student Zeke Fox for his courageous actions that saved a man’s life during a fire at Bayfront Park. The event, which began with a welcome prayer by the school chaplain, Sue O’Keefe, was attended by Her Worship Mayor Horwath, Hamilton Police Chief Bergen, Superintendent Julie Angiolillo, Principal Kevin Monaco, Reverend Father Jarek, Zeke’s family, and the school’s student council.

During the ceremony, Zeke was presented with a commendation from Mayor Horwath in recognition of his heroism. Chief Bergen also presented Zeke with a police coin, a symbol of honour and respect within the law enforcement community, and offered to mentor him should he choose to pursue a career in policing, saying, “Zeke’s actions show he already possesses the qualities we value in our officers.” Mayor Horwath commended Zeke’s bravery, stating, “Zeke’s actions reflect the very best of Hamilton—selflessness, courage, and compassion.”

Superintendent Julie Angiolillo emphasized the values displayed by Zeke, saying, “Zeke’s courage and selflessness are a reflection of the values we hold dear as a Catholic community. His actions remind us of God’s grace working through our students and the goodness they bring to the world.”

Principal Monaco expressed his gratitude to the guests and commended Zeke for his bravery, saying, “Zeke exemplifies the very best of Cathedral High School. His quick thinking and extraordinary bravery in such a dangerous situation are a testament to his character and the values we strive to instill in all our students.”

Zeke has inspired the community and earned recognition far beyond the school. His family, who were present at the event, shared their immense pride in his actions. Zeke’s story, including details of his heroic act, has been featured in the Hamilton Spectator, which can be read online here.
