The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board gathered on Friday, February 28, 2025, for its annual Faith Day, centered on the theme: Inspiring ReconciliACTION in Education.
This year’s Faith Day was particularly special as it marked the first time since before the pandemic that all staff were able to gather in person.
The day began with the Celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by His Excellency, Bishop Douglas Crosby, O.M.I. at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School. Under the direction of Nancy Boss and Chad Pilon, the choir enriched this memorable Mass through their gift of music.
During his homily, Bishop Crosby reflected on Pope Francis’ 2022 visit to Canada for healing and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and walking together in faith:
"When Pope Francis came to Canada a few years ago with the primary intention to meet with the Indigenous people, to offer words of apology and sorrow on the one hand, and words of encouragement and support on the other, he chose the theme 'walking together.' Walking is what pilgrims do, and that is what we are doing today—it is what life is all about, walking together, making our way home together. And as we do, may God bless us each and every one, giving us the grace and the energy to share the goodness that we discover in each other."
Following the Mass, keynote speaker Chief Cadmus Delorme delivered an inspiring address on Truth and Reconciliation: What We Inherited and What We Are Building on for a Long-Term Relationship.
"In Catholic teachings, reconciliation is a term that has been used for centuries. It is now time to use those tools within to focus on the relationship with Indigenous people," he said.
He acknowledged that conversations about truth can be difficult but stressed the importance of moving forward with respect and shared responsibility:
"Remember this—Indigenous people don't want anybody to feel sorry for us. We want parity like every other Canadian while our Indigenous world view is respected."
In addition to the keynote and liturgical celebration, the day also included reflection activities at individual school and board sites. These sessions provided staff with the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and explore ways to integrate the principles of Truth and Reconciliation into their vocation.
Board Chairperson Patrick Daly noted that he had recently read that “the greatest attraction to investigating spirituality and religion is observing people who live out a genuine faith”. I quote these words to express profound gratitude to each and every staff member of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board for being such people of faith for the students in our Catholic Schools.
He thanked His Excellency Bishop Crosby and Chief Delorme for honouring all gathered with their presence and Superintendent of Education Julie Angiolillo and the many people who worked so very hard to plan this hope filled day.
As Pilgrims of Hope, the HWCDSB community continues to walk forward together in faith and a shared commitment to Active Listening, Prayer and Right Action. In this spirit, the 2025 Jubilee calls us to renewal and trust in God’s guidance. As His Holiness Pope Francis so beautifully expressed:
"We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision."
