Grade 5 students at St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Elementary School are commemorating Black History Month by delving into the lives of Canadian figures who have shaped the nation’s history. Each student was tasked with selecting an influential individual—past or present—whose courage, determination, and resilience have left a lasting impact on Canadian society.

Through their research, the students explored the obstacles these figures faced, including discrimination, adversity, and systemic barriers, noted Teacher Robert Welsh.

“Yet, they persevered and made a lasting impact on our society. We have seen how each person’s journey teaches us the importance of perseverance, empathy, and standing up for what is right.”

Dr. Georges Vanier, a prominent Canadian social advocate, once emphasized the significance of teaching Black history, stating: "To teach history is not simply to recall facts, but to help students understand the struggles, dreams, and contributions that make up the fabric of our nation."

“This could encapsulate the essence of why Black History Month should be taught—it's about understanding the challenges, triumphs, and the rich cultural contributions of Black Canadians that shape the country,” said Welsh.

“By celebrating Black History Month, we honour these contributions and recognize how much further we must go to create a fairer world for everyone.”
